The polar form of the gradient
Abstract:
This was something I wrote for my multivariable calculus students. The hope was to give a simple and geometric explanation for why the polar form of the gradient operator looks the way it does, rather than just presenting it as the result of an unenlightening calculation with the chain rule. The paper is offered here as a postsript file, because it incorporates a number of external pictures.
