Homework Assignment


NOTE: The problems below are from our textbook. We allow both 6th edition and 7th edition of the textbook. In many cases, the two versions are identical. When they are not, problems will be stated for both editions in the form of [...] or [...]. Have a look at, say, the assignament for Week 2 to see the format. Also, the homeworks are from [6th ed. Problems] or [7th ed. Exercises] section, not from [6th ed. Computger Problems] or [7th ed. Computer Exercises].

Week 1 (Sept 30 - Oct 4) (due by Wednesday of Week 2)

  • Read Sections 1.1 and 1.2. Do the following problems:
  • Section 1.2, 1, 6, 8, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16.

    Week 2 (Oct 7 - 11) (due by Wednesday of Week 3)

  • Read [6th ed. Sections 2.1 and 2.2] or [7th ed. Sections 1.3 and 1.4]. Do the following problems:
  • Section 1.2: 20, 22, 30.
  • [6th ed. Section 2.2] or [7th ed. Section 1.4]: 2, 5, 11, 14, 24 b),d), 25, 29;
  • The webpage http://www.ima.umn.edu/~arnold/disasters/ points out several disasters attributable to bad numerical computing.

    Week 3 (Oct 14 - 18) (due by Wednesday of Week 4)

  • Read Sections 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3. Do the following problems:
  • Section 3.1: 1, 2, 8.
  • Section 3.2: 1, 4, 6, 11, 17, 23, 25, 28;

    Week 4 (Oct 21 - 25) (due by Wednesday of Week 5)

  • Read Sections 3.3 and 4.1. Do the following problems:
  • Section 3.3: 1, 5, 9.
  • Section 4.1: 1, 2, 3, 4, 9 (ignore the hint), 11, 31, 32.
  • Review Problems (optional): 1.2.5, 1.2.17, 1.2.18, [6th ed. 2.2.13, 2.2.22] or [7th ed. 1.4.13, 1.4.22], 3.1.10, 3.2.4, 3.2.11, 3.3.3, 3.3.9, 4.1.8, 4.1.12.

    Week 5 (Oct 28 - Nov 1) (due by Wednesday of Week 6)

  • Read Section 4.1 and 4.2. Do the following problems:
  • Section 4.1: 15, 19, 23.
  • Section 4.2: 1, 6, 7, 8, 17.
  • Midterm Review on Firday.

  • Read Section 4.3. Do the following problems:
  • Section 4.3: : 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 13, 16, 18, 19.
  • Midterm on Monday
