- Homework 4 (due 4/29):
- Reading 3 (due 4/28): Skim Chapter 5 if you want. Read 6.1–6.4.
- Reading 4 (due 5/5):
- Read section 8.1 to see some examples of linearization.
- Read the discussion of the nonlinear pendulum in section 9.2, which is split into two parts: first without friction, around figure 9.6, and then with friction, around figure 9.9.
- If you come across terms that you don’t recognize but that seem important, flip through the sections in between and read a little bit about them.
- Homework 5 (due 5/10):
- Chapter 6: #1 (choose two parts; also sketch the phase portraits), 2, 7, 12 (choose two parts), 13.
- Homework 6 (due 5/24):
- Chapter 8: #1.
- Chapter 9: #1 (choose three parts).
- Reading 5 (due 5/24): Sections 9.1, 11.1, 11.2.
- Homework 7 (due 5/31):
- Chapter 8: #5. Also sketch the nullclines and direction field.
- Chapter 9: #6. First sketch the phase portrait by finding nullclines and direction field, then equilibrium points and linearizations.
- Chapter 11: #1, 2.
- Which “Exploration’ section will you write up for your final project? You may choose anything from Chapter 7 on.
- Reading 6 (due 5/28): Sections 7.2, 17.1, 17.2.
- Midterm 2: June 5.
- Draft of final project: due June 7.
