  • Read section 8.1 to see some examples of linearization.
  • Read the discussion of the nonlinear pendulum in section 9.2, which is split into two parts: first without friction, around figure 9.6, and then with friction, around figure 9.9.
  • If you come across terms that you don’t recognize but that seem important, flip through the sections in between and read a little bit about them.

  • Chapter 9: #6. First sketch the phase portrait by finding nullclines and direction field, then equilibrium points and linearizations.
