The University of Oregon Department of Dance presents Dance Africa with special Ghanaian guest artists Alex Addy and Allotey Mensah Pappoe in their annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration performance, Jan 18-20 at the Dougherty Dance Theatre. Concluding a week-long residency, the concert includes new repertory choreographed by Addy and Pappoe, as well as performances by the duo. Alex Addy comes from a line of famed drummers from Ghana and has been a member of Homowo African Arts and Cultures since 1992. In addition to teaching in the the organization’s educational programs, he and has toured extensively with the Portland based performance group Okropong. Eric Mensah Pappoe, performed with the National Dance Company of Ghana, and for such dignitaries as President Clinton, Queen Elizabeth, and South African president Tabo Nbeki. An acrobat and fire-eater, he has also performed at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, GA. Show times are 8 pm Jan 18-20, $10, $5 students and seniors. |
