Orientation
University of Oregon students participating in the program are expected to enroll in a one-credit pre-departure orientation course (INTL 407/507) in Spring 2008, to be taught by Prof. Dennis Galvan, exploring issues of language, culture, food, lodging, health, safety, managing time, money and social relationships in Senegal.
For a great primer on culture, language and lifeways of Senegal, take a look at this introduction to French and Wolof in Senegal, put out by the Five College Center for the Study of World Languages.
Once in Dakar, the program begins with a welcome and on-site orientation. Students will meet local Co-Director Dr. Babacar Fall, the Wolof instructors, and Senegalese student counterparts, followed by an introduction to Senegalese society and guidelines for conduct and social interaction. Students will also be introduced to the program physicians and receive their phone numbers.
