Design Lessons Learned

Some of the lessons learned while conducting this case study are:

Proper Thermostat Location:

  • A thermostat should be placed where it can accurately measure the temperatures within a room.

Using ASHRAE 55-1992 as a design guideline:

  • ASHRAE 55-92 is helpful in setting up guidelines to make a thermally comfortable space. These guidelines take into account the activities that happen within the space (a person’s met rate), clothing that a typical person within the space might be wearing, wind speed, as well as many other factors that can affect thermal comfort within a space.

Looking at the whole picture:

  • Understanding how adjacent spaces affect the thermal comfort of each other. Through heat gain and or loss, and the way that the occupants use the space.
  • Try to keep adjacent spaces similar in temperature. For example the computer lab was referred to by some of the users as hot and stuffy, when it actually is within the comfort zone. The differences between the coolness of the library and the temperatures in the computer lab make the lab seem warmer then it is.
