The Lisio Foundation trip to Florence, Italy runs every other year. The Foundation is on a country estate on the south hills of Florence, Italy. It is 25 minutes by bus to the city's center. It has a studio with six Jacquard looms, a computer lab, a textile reference library, archive collection, production weaving studio, apartments for students, a park area, and a church.

Workshop
This program offers a unique experience to learn Jacquard silk weaving and design at the Foundation Lisio. Besides studio instruction on Jacquard looms, guided field trips to local museums, a textile conservation laboratory and a tour of a silkweaving firm in Venice are planned.

Students are evaluated on the same basis as on-campus courses. Students present their weavings, their resource notebook, and journal at a group review on the last day of the course. The resident director evaluates the work and reports a grade. Students are expected to participate in an UO exhibition of the work done.

In this intensive studio program, master weavers provide the instruction in English, assisted by Associate Professor and Resident Director Barbara Setsu Pickett. The studio experience is enriched with visits to museums and a textile conservation laboratory. Students earn 9 credit hours of upper division studio. Graduate students design with the resident director additional coursework like learning Jacquard software or the CIETA fabric analysis system. Students work in teams on class assignments. Student design work and woven samples designated by the resident director become part of the UO Fibers Area archive.

Costs
Tuition for 9 credit hours is $3815, includes instruction, materials, and housing at the Foundation.  The UO reserves the right to adjust the program fee if the exchange rate fluctuates significantly, and Pickett will immediately notify participants of any budget changes.  Air and ground transportation, meals, museum fees, Internet access, personal shopping and the optional field trip expenses to Venice are not included in the tuition.  Because the passport application process is taking considerable time, students are advised to apply before or when they turn in their applications.

Academic Program

Students are in studio from 9:00 to 5:00 Monday through Thursday and half day on Friday.

Academic Standards
Evaluation is similar to on-campus courses.  Students present their designs, technical data sheets, weavings, and journals at a critique on the last class day of the course.  The resident director evaluates the work and reports the grade.  Students have the option to take this course P/N.   The students organize and exhibit their work in the LaVerne Krause Gallery in winter term.

Resident Director
Barbara Setsu Pickett, Associate Professor, Department of Art, is the resident director. This is the 7th time this course has been offered.  She leads field trips and helps the students with logistics before and during the course. She has a long association with the Foundation where she did her Fulbright Research fellowship in 1986-87 and an UO Summer Research award in 1994. Her research focuses on silk velvet weaving. 

Eligibility
The program is open to undergraduates, graduates, and community education students.  Participants need a basic knowledge of weaving.  No experience on Jacquard looms is mandatory, but taking ARTF 408/508 Jacquard Spring 2008 for 4 credit hours is often the determining factor in the selection process. Conversational Italian is very useful.  Participants must be 18 years old and have a 3.0 GPA or better.  Having health insurance and a student visa is required.  Pickett interviews and selects the applicants. 

Application Process
Applications are available from Pickett and can be submitted anytime before the Thursday, Jan 10, 2008 deadline.  A $50 nonrefundable application fee is required at the time of application and will be applied to the tuition, if the application is accepted.  Submit application form and fee to Pickett.  Checks are made payable to: University of Oregon. 

Selection is by interview.  Because only 6 are chosen, after accepting 6 applicants, the resident director will keep a waiting list and fill any vacancies from the list.  An additional $500 will be due upon the student's acceptance into the program.  It will also apply to the tuition.  If the course is not fully enrolled, the University reserves the right to cancel it.

Travel
The Foundation is 25 minutes by bus to the city's center. Students primary mode of transportation is bus or taxi.

Financial Aid
Most forms of financial aid, such as loans and grants for which students are eligible, may be applied to the costs of this program.  Students should consult with a financial aid counselor at the Office of Student Financial Aid, 260 Oregon Hall, for specific information about awards and eligibility.  Students are advised to apply early to assure full consideration.

Refund Policy
If a student withdraws from the program after June 5, 2008 the $50 application fee and $500 deposit are not refundable.  If a student withdraws from the program after June 5, 2008, and an eligible replacement can be found by Pickett, the balance of the tuition $3265 will be refunded.
