Textual Notes

1 Joyce's “know” is clear in draft on level 5--whatever he intended with the apparently ungrammatical construction he forgot by the time of the “Corrections” (Level 13), for there he changes it to the expected “knows”.

2 Overlay “as yayas...” is in red ink with red indices at level 10 on galley 57 (which is fairly evenly divided among red and green overlays). The second “y” of the first “yayas” is supplemented by a pencil line making clear that it is not a “j”--Joyce's pen must have failed on that stroke, though the rest of the overlay is full and smooth.
