Chapter 3, level 5+*
Archive 45: xiv, suggests that “It is probably from a neater copy of this
typescript [level 5] that transition 3 was printed.” Many unauthorized
differences between levels 5 and 6, many additions made to level 5 which are
not carried forward to level 6 (suggesting they were made after the final
typescript was sent to the printer), and many level 5 overlays in Giorgio
Joyce's hand and green ink for which we lack Joycean holograph (suggesting
that Joyce added them on the missing typescript and Giorgio copied them back
to level 5 in the effort to square them), all strongly suggest that such a
typescript was prepared and sent to the printer. See my article in Genetricksling
Joyce (Amsterdam, 1999), for more details.
Note that two pages of such a final typescript would, as themselves retypings
of level 5+ pages, be designated 5‡*, q.v.
Note that, as with the similarly probably missing typescript in chapter 2,
such a typescript for transition 3 ought under the Archive system to
have a whole numbered revision level, but that we choose not to disrupt the
numbering system in such a case.
