Typescript (carbon) of level 6, fol. 314 (JJA 46: 159), with a set of
Joyce's revisions on fol. 314 written in by Giorgio Joyce (not entirely accurately)
in green ink and a few of Joyce's revisions written in in black ink. Joyce
made further corrections on fol. 314 which are not written back to this carbon.
The carbon paper used, uniquely in chapters 2-4, is blue, and the typewriter,
also uniquely, has a separate key for exclamation point rather than requiring
the keystrokes period, backspace, apostrophe. The Archive misdesignates fol.
292 as 4§2.5‡, describing it as a “Retyped version of §2.5+”,
which is the missing (though two carbons exist, fols. 290, 291 [JJA 46: 126,
127]) retyping of level 5, fol. 289 (JJA 46: 111), on which presumably
appears for the first time the draft of chapter 4's final poem, FW: 102.31-103.06
(though the poem could well have been in draft on a separate sheet).
That the Archive misses that fol. 292 is a carbon of f. 314 (and therefore
should be labelled as a prime rather than in the plus series) causes the
wrong implication that it precedes fol. 314. The latter could itself be labelled
as level 5‡, but it seems better to preserve the Archive designation of level
6, since it is no different from all the other final retypings of level 5
pages which are so designated.
