Chapters 2, 3, 4, level 8‡*
The Archive “Prefaces” (JJA 45: x, xv, JJA 46: xii) suggest for each
of chapters 2-4 that a final set of transition proofs was probably
sent to the Wake printer. Though there are differences between 8-8+T
and 9 which argue at least instruction of various kinds (verbal or written),
in general the differences in level 9 make sense as understandable misinterpretations
of the 8+-8+T markings, and there are relatively few fresh errors of the
sort likely to have been made in transcribing overlays to a missing set.
While the errors could have been telegraphed through a missing set of pages
and typescripts, it seems more likely that the typesetter worked with the
pages and typescripts we have.
