B. Marketing Educational Technology Support Services for Faculty
Many faculty are unaware of the range of support services available on campus. This lack of awareness results in both underused resources and duplication of effort and expense. If we boost our investment in centralized services, we need to include an aggressive outreach effort to help increase faculty awareness and use. Such an effort would include the following:
- Develop an IT Directory for the campus. This online directory could be searched by type of service, name of provider, etc. A full description of the units services, costs, hours of operation, etc would be available. (The Library has surveyed the campus for this information and the site will be available beginning of fall term 04). [here is the input form for service providers]
- Complete the integration of services within the Library. One of the initiatives on the Librarys 2004 Plan is to integrate the wide range of media, educational technology and instructional support services within the UO Libraries and to create an online portal to simplify access to currently disparate services. The expected results include a seamless approach to a complex array of inter-related services, higher visibility, and more efficient use of library resources. Along with this new integration will be revised organizational structure and a new name. This umbrella termwill convey the one-stop shoppingconcept and eliminate the confusion associated with too many separate services, e.g. FITT, IMG, Image Services Center, ScholarsBank, etc.
- Presentations at New Faculty Orientation and Deans/Department Heads Retreat. These sessions are excellent opportunities to introduce a new integrated and expanded service. Our goal would be to have some handouts/brochures available.
- Departmental Meetings. The Library has liaisons in all departments. We will work with those individuals and the department heads to schedule some time to meet with as many departments as possible during the year. Face-to-face discussions are the best way to explain a new service and generate interest. It also give us the opportunity to better match extant services to a particular departments curriculum.
- Press Coverage and Announcements. Information on a new integrated service would be described in Inside Oregon, FYI (Librarys newsletter to faculty), the Library's website, and other appropriate campus publications.
- Periodic Meetings between Ed Tech Chairs and Deans: These meetings would be designed to obtain periodic feedback about school/college wide curriculum issues or problems which could be addressed with educational technology.
While the marketing efforts primary purpose is to increase faculty awareness, we also hope it will encourage more faculty to consider new approaches to teaching that exploit the potential of current technologies. Ideally, the marketing efforts should be tied to a campus strategic plan rather than specific services. We believe the campus is ready to move forward with a more comprehensive plan that makes best use of our resources, envisions what the college classroom of tomorrow should look like, and results in transformative change in the teaching and learning process.
