Strategic Goal #3: Partnerships

The AEI will strengthen and diversify our valued partnerships at the UO, and at the local, national, and international levels. Relationships within the UO, with other academic institutions, non-government organizations, industries, and governments will be mutually beneficial, collaborative, and will address the evolving needs of our stakeholders. Within the UO, AEI expertise will help meet the language and academic needs of international students while incorporating expertise from other departments into our face-to-face and online classes.

Key strategies and actions:

3.1 Establish and enhance cross-departmental curricular partnerships on campus.

3.1.1 Collaborate with other departments on campus and solicit their input in order to better support the needs of international students.
3.1.2 Establish strong partnerships with other colleges and academic departments with bridge, adjunct or support classes for matriculated international students.
3.1.3 Develop courses that focus specifically on improving writing skills in particular disciplines.
3.1.4 Provide workshops in collaboration with the Teaching Effectiveness Program every term for university professors to help them meet the needs of international students.
3.1.5 Encourage AEI faculty and staff to participate in UO committees and task forces on topics of strategic interest.
3.1.6. Strengthen language support for matriculated UO students
a. Work with UO faculty and administration to initiate potential joint efforts such as: a writing lab, upper-division writing or other skills-based courses, additional content-related adjunct courses, or Freshman Interest Groups (FIGs).
b. Work with UO faculty and administration to create a system for cohort support and mentoring for matriculated international students.
3.1.7. Share expertise about strategies for working with international students with instructional faculty from other departments and colleges.

3.2 Strengthen and build international partnerships and collaborations with major international institutions, including faculty exchange, teacher training, student exchange and curriculum development.

3.2.1 Actively pursue partnerships or sister university relationships and work together to formulate sponsored programs and/or exchange programs.
3.2.2 Offer faculty opportunities to work abroad with stakeholders on site.
3.2.3 Hold events at the AEI including webinars and workshops, and invite national and global strategic partners.
3.2.4 Systematically involve faculty and staff in conferences and workshops as presenters in countries/institutions where we want to strengthen ties.

3.3 Leverage existing relationships to strengthen and build diverse international partnerships with NGOs, government organizations and multinational corporations in targeted regions.

3.3.1 Identify and establish additional partnerships with non-profit organizations that are committed to expanding ESOL education.
3.3.2 Continue to strengthen institutional relationships with regional and national funding offices such as IIE (Institute for International Education), Fulbright and EducationUSA, along with foreign diplomatic offices, i.e., consulates, embassies and cultural attaches.
3.3.3 Pursue strategic partnerships with multinational companies.

3.4 Pursue relationship opportunities within the local community.

3.4.1 Reach out to local K-12 ESOL experts to create learning opportunities for sponsored program participants.
3.4.2 Explore service opportunities for partnerships with local groups in order to provide exposure to different educational models.

Measures of success:

  • The AEI will have established a formal relationship with an overseas "sister" institution. (add a date)
  • The AEI will have sent no fewer than X faculty per year overseas for teacher-training and/or curriculum development opportunities.
  • The AEI will have established an annual faculty-led professional development workshop, inviting overseas and national partners to participate.
  • EDIT: The AEI will have participated in no fewer than X international conferences per year in targeted regions. (have a baseline or report a statistical increase)
  • The AEI will have formally established a sponsored program with at least one NGO, a government organization, preferably from a targeted country, and a multinational corporation.
  • The AEI will have collaborated with another department such as International Studies in order to develop and offer a FIG.
  • The AEI will have developed curriculum and scheduled an ongoing BA 101 adjunct class for AEIS students in collaboration with faculty in the Business School.
  • The AEI will have conducted a cross-departmental needs analysis in order to explore additional opportunities for adjunct classes, and offer at least two additional 100-level adjunct classes.
  • The AEI will have developed AEIS reading and writing classes adapted to newly-identified student needs across departments.
  • The AEI will have worked with the Teaching Effectiveness Program to offer faculty workshops every term to assist faculty in how they can better support the learning needs of international students.
  • The AEI will have established a program in which GTFs and LT students are actively engaged in local K-12 classrooms.
