Project Planning and Management

Workshop Nov 7 - 9, 2007

Project Planning Team

Once you know what functions are most affected by the success of the project and which ones will most affect or contribute to the success of it you'll know who you need on your planning team.

The planning team should have between 4-7 members (excluding the project manager and Sponsor). Each member should have a function for which they advocate. They also should be able to see the overview and not try to push advocacy for their own functions beyond what is best for the project. Find out from a program manager or a portfolio manager who in the organization is available and how much time that person can devote to your project. If somebody you'd like on your team can't devote as much time as you need but you really want them, maybe they could act as a consultant during the specific times you need them.

If you don't know who the best advocate for a certain function might be go to the functional manager and ask him who should be on the Planning Team. Tell him how much time may be needed, tell him what skills you need in the team member, etc.

Once you know who will be Team Members make a little chart, and share the chart with everybody in the project now and later so everybody knows whose role is what:

Team roster
Function 1 Molly
Function 2 Holly
Function 3 Billy
Function 4 Willy
