Classical Field Instabilities, the Null Energy Condition and w<-1

We show that the null energy condition is directly related to the signature of the kinetic term for small fluctuations in a broad class of classical field theories of scalars and gauge bosons. When the null energy condition is violated, instabilities necessarily arise. In models of the dark energy, where T_{00}>0, the null energy condition reduces to the condition that w\ge -1.
