Simply Natural Lamb's Wool Shawl

(Copyright Jackie Fish)

This shawl is more than a triangle: There are two extra increase rows. This shaping allows the shawl to fit smoothly over the shoulders. The knitting proceeds from the top with garter stitch or any lace. A lace edging is knitted on sideways to finish the lower edge.

Materials: 650 (about) yards of some nice natural-colored wool yarn. Sample knitted in a light sport weight 2-ply, handspun yarn, 7 ounces.
Needle size: 6 to 9 US Blocked Gauge: about 3 sts per inch.
Knit and block a swatch!

Cast on 3 stitches. Work in garter stitch. *YO increase at the beginning of
every row to 10 stitches. Mark the 2 center stitches. Although this shawl is reversible, keeping the 2 center stitches in stocking stitch determines right side for the purpose of increasing. Continue the YO increase at the beginning of every row. And, increase by YO before and after center stitches on right side rows.

*YO at the beginning of the row creates a very loose edge.
If a firmer edge is desired Knit 3, YO at the beginning of every row.

Extra Increase Rows:
Continue increasing as established. Knit 12 ridges.
Work the following extra increases by make 1 twisted. *
Increase by knit 3, make 1 across row. (31-2-31)
Knit 3 ridges.
Increase by knit 3, make 1 across row. (48-2-48)
Make sure to balance these extra increases either side of center stitches.

* Make 1 twisted is just simple cast on. When knitting into it on the next row twist it again. This is the most invisible, least distorting increase in garter stitch fabric.

After the extra increase rows are knitted, you may plug in any lace pattern.

Knit the shawl as established to 75 ridges, or desired length, before adding edging. When knitting one stitch of lace edging together with 1 stitch of shawl K 2 tog through the back loop. Turn. Slip first stitch, with yarn in front.

The sample shawl is knit in plain garter stitch to 60 ridges.
Knit 2 eyelet rows: * YO, K2 tog, across row. Knit 3 ridges. *
Repeat * to * one time.
Remember to balance pattern at center. The sample shawl is 75 ridges total. 350 stitches before the Zig-zag Half-Diamond Edging. Easy Eyelet Edging finishes the top edge.

Here are some optional ways to begin.

until there are 12 ridges from beginning.
Follow instructions given above for extra increase rows.

2nd Alternate Beginning: Gray Striped Alpaca Shawl
A striped shawl is a nice way to show off some very special yarns or play with colors.

Knit 2, YO, Knit 2 tog, knit 1, at the beginning of every row. (Cast on 5 stitches and knit 4 inches of this selvage, then pick up and knit across the Knit 1 edge and the cast on stitches. Proceed with shawl increasing on right side, by YO at each edge inside the established 5 stitch selvage.
And increase each side of center stitches as described above.
