Working in segregated institutions for people with mental retardation in the 1970's convinced me of the importance of promoting non-segregated inclusive arts educational environments. My studies in Art Education at Ohio University (B.S., 1974) and The Oh io State University (M.A., 1979; Ph.D., 1983); my teaching in schools, community arts centers, and universities; and my research over the past twenty years has all been attentive to providing art educational experiences in schools and other community-base d settings that meet the needs of all people. Recent research and teaching has also concentrated on the relationship of art to place and socio-ecological perspectives. My resea rch has been published in Studies in Art Education, theJournal of Multicultural and Cross-Cultural Research in Art Education, and theVisual Sociology Review among other journals. I co-edited with Kristin G. Congdon Art in a Democracy and Pluralistic Appr oaches to Art Criticism. My advocacy efforts have included leadership positions within the United States Society for Education through Art and the Caucus on Social Theory in Art Education. My research, teaching and service has been recognized with the 19 92 NAEA Manual Barkan Award, delivery of a Kenneth Marantz Invited Lecture at The Ohio State University in 1993, the 1993 NAEA Pacific Region Higher Education Educator of the Year Award, and the 1991 OAE Higher Education Educator of the Year Award.
