Math 111, WebWork sections: Information for sections with GTFs on strike, Fall 2014

The information on this page only applies to MA111 sections that have been using Webwork this quarter: CRNs 13791, 13814, 13815, 13820, 16772, and 17299.
Please forgive the length of these instructions, but also please take the time to read them carefully. There are some very important details here.

Your course has used WeBWorK for homework, and you may have also taken the WeBWorK-based "readiness quiz" at the beginning of the quarter. Your final exam will also be administered through your class's WeBWorK section.

That means that unless otherwise notified, you do NOT need to be physically in your final exam room at the designated time.

The Sample Final

If you visit your WeBWorK course, you should now see an open test called "Sample Final Exam" (it may be down at the bottom of the list of other WeBWorK assignments). The sample final is of the same format and similar (not identical) content to the actual final exam.

The sample final should give you the ability to practice content for the exam as well as get familiar with what an exam in WeBWorK looks like. You may attempt new versions of this sample final every day! After you complete the sample exam, answers and solutions will be available to you.

I strongly encourage you to (a) review your old material and then (b) try this Sample Exam at least once and review your answers before you attempt the real final.

I also strongly encourage you, when taking both sample AND real tests to use the Preview Problems button next to each question. This will tell you if you are missing a parenthesis, or if your answer doesn't make sense to WeBWorK. This does not count as submitting your test, so you can Preview as many times as you like while taking the exam.

The Real Final

2 hours before your scheduled final exam time, the real final exam will open in WeBWorK. Once opened (as SOON as you click on the link called "Take Common Final Exam test") the timer will start! Do NOT click the link for the "Real Final Exam" test until you are ready to start the real final exam. You will have 120 minutes to press the Grade Test button, the same length of time you would have for an in-class final exam.

Here is an example: If your scheduled final exam time begins at 2:45pm on Tuesday (look it up in DuckWeb or on the classes.uoregon.edu website if you are unsure of your final exam day/time), the WeBWorK exam will open at 12:45pm and will remain clickable until 2:45pm. If you click on it at 1:30pm, the timer will begin immediately and you will need to press the Grade Test button before 3:30pm.

Let me state this one more time: You will need to press the Grade Test button before time expires in order to have your grade recorded. It's like turning in a hand-written test or shooting a three-pointer before the buzzer, it needs to happen before time runs out.

Additional Notes

Acceptable exam materials include: a calculator, a sheet of notes, and any scratch paper you need to complete your work. The same rules regarding academic misconduct (i.e. cheating) govern this exam as well. We are relying on you to use only these materials for your exam.

Finally, I have attached some additional, non-WeBWorK practice problems and solutions if you want more to work with. These are some more challenging problems to engage you in the material, but the content on the final exam is most similar to the Sample Final Exam posted now in WeBWorK.

Please let me know if I can help clarify anything in this very confusing and probably frustrating time. I can assure you that the math department administration is working day and night to try to make this as fair for you as possible while still being physically manageable.
