EUGENE, Ore. -- (Oct. 5, 2009) – A reception is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, for the exhibits "World Harmony-Musical Instruments from around the Globe" and "Shall We Dance?" The free community event will take place at the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History, 1680 E. 15th Ave.
"World Harmony" includes more than 70 examples of instruments from six continents. The exhibit also showcases the people who play the instruments and the role that music plays in many cultures. The event will include performances of Bulgarian music by Levy & Ken Sokolov, as well as Zimbabwean music by the Vakasara Mbira Group.
“The overriding theme of 'World Harmony' is intended to portray harmony in a humanistic sense, acknowledging the commonalities as well as the diversity of musical traditions from all over the world,” said Mark Levy, professor of ethnomusicology at the School of Music and Dance and exhibit curator.
Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Brian Lanker’s "Shall We Dance?" exhibit was featured in the museum’s new Public Galleria in June and July and has returned for the fall. Lanker’s photographs feature both professional and amateur dancers, reflecting a variety of personalities, emotions and dance styles. Lanker will be available during the reception to discuss his work and answer questions. He will sign limited edition prints available at the reception.
Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. Admission is $3 for adults; $2 for seniors and youths ages 17 and under; and $8 for families (two adults and up to four youths). Museum members, university faculty and staff and students are admitted free. Admission is free for the public on Wednesdays.
