UO graduate programs continue to earn high marks in education, law

EUGENE, Ore. -- (April 23, 2009) -- The University of Oregon College of Education ranks number one among public institutions and fourth overall in the nation in the U.S. News & World Report's 2010 edition of America's Best Graduate Schools announced today.

The college's special education program ranked third, a position it has held for the past ten years.

"We're very proud of the significant impacts all of the university's graduate programs make on our campus, the state of Oregon and beyond," said UO Senior Vice President and Provost Jim Bean. "As we prepare to open the expanded and renovated College of Education buildings in June, it's a pleasure to see that the quality of the educational programs continue to rise in the highest levels of national prominence."

The College of Education ranked sixth in total funded research with an increase from $28.6 million in 2008 to $29.5 million in the 2010 edition. In the education category, UO was the top school, public or private, in the amount of funded research per faculty member with $905,600.

"National rankings reinforce what we know about the quality and productivity of leading graduate programs at the University of Oregon," said Richard Linton, vice president for research and graduate studies. "We have outstanding faculty involved in graduate teaching, research and outreach endeavors that allow the UO to compete with much larger research universities across the U.S."

The UO School of Law also received top 10 honors for three of its programs. In its fourth year since inception, the Conflict Resolution program has again ranked seventh in the country. The Environmental Law program is ranked tenth for 2010 and the Legal Writing program has moved up from tenth in 2009 to sixth in the 2010 edition.

In addition, the College of Arts and Sciences' clinical psychology program is listed in the top 25 in the U.S., positioning it among the top 15 percent of programs in the nation. The psychology program also is ranked among the top 15 percent in the nation, while the university's biological sciences program is listed among the top 50 in the country.

Rankings in the U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Graduate Schools are based on student selectivity, placement success, faculty resources and separate measures of institutional reputation.
