PORTLAND, Ore. -- (Jan. 26, 2012) -- “Notes on a Recent Arrival,” an installation of selected works by six University of Oregon Department of Art faculty artists, will be on view at the White Box in Portland from Jan. 24 through March 24. A free, open to the public reception and remarks by the show’s curator, Stamatina Gregory, will be from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 2, at the White Box.
Artists featured in “Notes on a Recent Arrival” are Carla Bengtson, Craig Hickman, Colin Ives, Dan Powell, Jack Ryan and Kartz Ucci. “Notes on a Recent Arrival” runs concurrently with the exhibit “The Long Now” at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art in Eugene. “The Long Now” is also curated by Stamatina Gregory and provided the conceptual premise for “Notes on a Recent Arrival.”
Gregory is an independent curator and critic from New York City. Taking the title, “Notes on a Recent Arrival” from a 1995 essay that laments a loss of connection people have to the sites they inhabit, Gregory sees the exhibited works challenging us to engage a renewed relationship to our surrounding environment. Many of the “Notes on a Recent Arrival” exhibiting artists are engaging new technology to explore agency and mediation.
“Mapping biological, technological, or cultural systems over one another—synesthesia and poetry, semiotics and the labor of ants, biological perception and mechanical recording—the projects installed not only connect different frames of inquiry, but reveal the gaps in our perception and understanding, forming a deeper, fuller picture of spatiotemporal experience,” said Gregory.
Laura Vandenburgh, the Ann Swindells Chair and head of the Department of Art, saidthe exhibition “represents the work of many new artists who have joined the [UO] faculty recently, as well as significant developments in the work of long-standing faculty. We are excited to present the work of our active and diverse faculty, many of whom show nationally and internationally, but rarely within our own region.”
In addition to the exhibition in Portland, “The Long Now,” an exhibition featuring the works of 22 UO art faculty members, will be on view January 21 through April 8 in the Coeta and Donald Barker Changing Exhibitions Gallery at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the Eugene campus.
“The Long Now” and “Notes on a Recent Arrival” are made possible with support from the Donald and Coeta Barker Changing Exhibitions Endowment Fund, the William C. Mitchell Estate, JSMA members, the Ann Swindells Chair in Architecture and Allied Arts, and the School of Architecture and Allied Arts.
