UO staff tuition discounts add up

The Register-Guard: A steep discount on tuition that the state offers University of Oregon employees and their offspring is proving increasingly valuable as the UO keeps raising the price of tuition. The employee benefit allows UO employees and family members to get 70 percent off the cost of tuition for up to 12 credits per semester. They would pay $636 for tuition in fall term, compared with $2,013 in tuition for in-state students who are paying full freight ... The tuition waiver program for employees, spouses and dependents is a statewide program of the Oregon University System.

Jeremy Lin Said to Be in Talks With Harvard on Licensing Deal

Bloomberg Businessweek: Houston Rockets point guard Jeremy Lin and his alma mater, Harvard University, are in talks to create a co-licensed merchandise line ... A Lin-related line would be an economic and brand-building boon to Harvard ... said Paul Swangard, managing director of the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at the University of Oregon. “Jeremy Lin provides an incredible platform for Harvard in China,” Swangard said in an e-mail. “To millions of Chinese children, the NBA and Harvard are separately ‘aspirational brands’ and Lin is uniquely positioned to align their messages. I predict Lin will become one of the most effective brand- building tools for Harvard in China.”

How Does Football Success Affect Student Performance?

The Chronicle of Higher Education: New research suggests that students study less and party more when their football team wins--and a successful season on the gridiron significantly reduces the grades of male students relative to females ... This study--by Jason M. Lindo, Isaac D. Swensen, and Glen R. Waddell, three researchers at the University of Oregon--looked at the effect of football success on student grade-point averages on the Eugene campus over nine football seasons ... The researchers found, among other things, that: Twenty-four percent of males reported that athletic success either “definitely” or “probably” decreased their study time, compared with only 9 percent of females.

University of Oregon Police Department makes official launch

KMTR: The University of Oregon's Department of Public Safety has officially changed its name to the University of Oregon Police Department, but the transition to a full-on campus police force is far from over ... While the “University of Oregon Police Department” sounds more official in terms of law enforcement capacity, for now, UOPD is still operating in essentially the same capacity as the Department of Public Safety. The transition to a total police department will take about six years to complete ... While the sworn officers have the same authority as any other state certified Oregon police officer, UOPD officers are not carrying any different weapons and they're not carrying guns ... Without guns, UOPD says it won’t do certain arrests, traffic stops, prisoner transports or serve warrants.
