State schools work together in Civil War blood, energy drives
The Daily Barometer: Pitted against each other, the University of Oregon and Oregon State University campuses are swept up in the euphoria of the poignant Civil War football game. Beyond the competition, groups from both campuses have continued with cooperative efforts during a time where both schools remain steeped in anticipation of this rivalry game. Benefiting students’ wellness and encouraging friendly sport, OSU’s Student Sustainability Initiative and U of O’s Office of Sustainability are sponsoring the “Energy Civil War.” The U of O Student Recreation Center and OSU’s Dixon Recreation Center have been counting the energy created by ReRev elliptical machines, 10 selected for competition in each facility ... OSU also took on UO in the 11th annual Civil War Blood Drive.
Historicizing the war between the state schools
The Daily Barometer: Think the Civil War rivalry is bad this year? At least it hasn’t become as ugly as it did in 1957. In 1957, several student athletes from the University of Oregon decided they needed to exact revenge on Oregon State University, after some Beavers removed and cut up a giant “O” on top of Skinner Butte in Eugene. Abduction was the course these U of O students decided to take ... Over the last few years, Oregon’s team has risen to national prominence. While the Beavers have returned to obscurity, the stakes at play for this year’s Civil War seem as high as ever, with a lot more than just bragging rights on the line. Whatever the outcome, the game will likely be remembered for the foreseeable future.
Big Ten expansion highlights Fox push for leverage
USA Today: The Big Ten expands to the East Coast, bringing along the television network it co-owns with Fox. News Corp., Fox's parent company, announces it will buy a 49% stake in the YES Network, a new sports channel likely to launch next year ... “No question, everyone has been trying to figure out a counter-punch to ESPN,” says Paul Swangard, who oversees sports business studies at the University of Oregon. “We see Comcast getting into the ring and this is Fox getting into the ring in a clash of media titans. And it's all driven by sports being the king of media content.”
Departures: College and university museums are the hidden jewels of the U.S. art scene ... Some of these museums have unusual, often highly personal origins ... These institutions also tend to have an advantage over their off-campus contemporaries, formulating cutting-edge exhibits based on new research and ideas from academia. “[They] can take chances that non-academic museums often can’t,” says Jill Hartz, executive director of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon and president of the Association of Academic Museums and Galleries. “This makes us exciting places to see new things, find new connections. We’re in the community engagement business.”

Oregon Civil War: To the victor goes the platypus
KVAL: College football rivalries are known for their victory trophies. Stanford and Cal play for the Axe. USC and UCLA play for the Victory Bell. And many, many years ago the University of Oregon and Oregon State had something just as epic. The platypus trophy was created in 1959 by a University of Oregon Fine Arts student after officials from both universities came up with the idea. Warren Spady had just one month to finish it before the Oregon Civil War game. “I had an old stuffed platypus that didn't have much of a figure and I mean this is football you have to have something that has a little power,” Spady said.
Duck mascot, cheerleaders visit caps Civil War Food Drive
The Creswell Chronicle: A dual focus on community service and positive behavior at Creslane Elementary School in the month of November resulted in students gathering 5,437 food items -- nearly 5,170 pounds --for Community Food for Creswell ... The Civil War Food Drive wrapped with a visit from the UO Duck and cheerleaders, who posed for classroom photos and signed autographs before joining staff and the 588 eligible students on the playground, where Sanipac's Duck Truck and RVs belonging to community volunteers were set up for a tailgating-style party.
