The Erb Memorial Union will be a little more hectic than usual Thursday, May 24, as undergraduate students gather to display their research posters and deliver talks about their academic pursuits.
The students -- 139 in all -- will be coming to the University of Oregon's second Undergraduate Research Symposium from many disciplines across campus. Visitors will have the opportunity to look over 68 posters and/or hear some of 36 talks. The symposium is part of the inaugural UO "Celebrate Undergraduate Achievement Week."
Full details can be found in the event's official program.
Registration begins at 8 a.m., with a welcome reception at 10:30 a.m. featuring an address by Karen Sprague, professor of biology and vice provost for undergraduate studies, in the EMU ballroom.
From 11 a.m. to noon, posters will be on display in the EMU concourse area. Oral presentations will be delivered concurrently in the EMU's River, Maple and Oak rooms. An Information Fair will run from 11:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the EMU ballroom lobby. An hour-long invitation-only luncheon will be held in the ballroom beginning at noon.
Afternoon sessions (1:15-2:15) will include poster and oral presentations in the same areas of the morning sessions. The event's closing celebration will run from 2:30 to 2:15 p.m. in the EMU ballroom.
The Division of Undergraduate Studies, Division of Academic Enrichment in the Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence, University Housing, Robert D. Clark Honors College, UO Libraries, Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity, and Division of Student Affairs are sponsors of the Undergraduate Research Symposium.
Event organizers are Sprague; Audrey Cramer, director of academic enrichment at the Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence; and Kevin Hatfield, assistant director of academic initiatives for University Housing.
Adding to the EMU activity that day is the conclusion of the two-day Indigenous Peoples, Climate Change and Environmental Knowledge Conference, which also will draw participation from UO students.
