EUGENE, Ore. -- (May 21, 2012) – UO TeachOUT, a two-day conference on educational issues related to gender and sexuality inequality in schools, will be held May 23-24 at the University of Oregon. The event will offer a series of workshops, lectures and a leadership summit.
TeachOUT will also feature a screening and discussion by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Debra Chasnoff of her groundbreaking film, “It’s Elementary: Talking about Gay Issues in Schools.” Chasnoff will talk about an ongoing political battle over the legitimacy of today’s documented 650,000 same-sex families living in the United States.
A group of activist filmmakers from Seattle will also show its film, “Put THIS on the Map: Reteaching Gender and Sexuality.”
Here’s the schedule of public TeachOUT events:
May 24 morning session
10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Knight Library Browsing Room
LGBTQ student panel, screening of the film “It’s Elementary: Talking about Gay Issues in Schools,” and conversation with filmmaker Debra Chasnoff.
May 24 evening session
6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Ford Alumni Center, Giustina Ballroom
Education Foundation Student Reception, screening of “It’s STILL Elementary” the follow-up to the morning film with filmmaker Debra Chasnoff; and screening of “Put THIS on the Map: Reteaching Gender and Sexuality” with the filmmakers.
In addition to the public events on May 24, local educators who have advanced gender and sexuality equity in education will receive Jane Addams Excellence in Equity Education Awards at a May 23 leadership summit. Current research and best practices for educators will be discussed at the summit.
Students from the UO Department of Education Studies will also host two outreach workshops for local K-12 school districts on May 24.
