Developer eyes property near UO for 12-story apartment building

Apparently high enough to fill a 12-story apartment tower on what is now an empty lot on the northeast corner of East Broadway and Ferry Street ... LG is just the latest entity to glom onto the UO enrollment boom. Numerous local and regional developers in the past several years have rushed to build student-housing complexes near the UO ... The UO has seen steadily increasing enrollment, from 20,300 in 2007 to about 24,600 this fall ... The UO Office of Institutional Research projects that enrollment will peak at somewhere near 25,150 in the following years. But some UO officials have talked of eventually increasing enrollment beyond that, perhaps to 30,000.

UO gives $20k scholarship to new students with high GPAs

KVAL: The University of Oregon started a scholarship aimed at rewarding high-achieving high school students with scholarship money. University staff said they want to give Oregon residents the opportunity to get a higher education even if they can't afford it. "In smaller areas like the rural parts of Douglas County, we tend to see financial barriers as being the primary reason why students aren't able to enroll at a place like the U of O and we are trying to work with them to meet them in the middle," said Assistant Director of Admissions David Van Der Haeghen ... There are two new scholarships that will be available for students in the fall of 2013.

Bicycles + Headphones = Safety Issue

KVAL: With one look at a bike rack at the University of Oregon it becomes apparent that a large number of people choose to pedal for the commute. However getting the attention of some campus-bound cyclists isn’t as easy: many UO students wear headphones while their riding their bicycles. Kelly McIver, public information officer for the UO Police Department, said using headphones while you ride a bicycle is a distraction. “It’s just another thing impeding your senses, that keeps you from being as aware as possible from everything going on around you,” he said.
