EUGENE, Ore. -- (Oct. 17, 2013) – Veteran freelancer Julie Williams offers the following advice for anyone considering independent work as a career or lifestyle choice.
“Make sure you have your eyes wide open,” she says.
Along with fellow University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) graduate and freelancer Jackson Hager, Williams will speak at “The Fearless Freelancer,” a public event Oct. 24, at the George S. Turnbull Center in Portland. The 5:30 p.m. event will feature a spirited discussion, Q&A, and light refreshments on Floor 3R of the White Stag Building, NW 70 Couch St.
Williams and Hager will address the question: Just how does a successful freelancer become successful? They will discuss how they got started in freelancing, their motivations, challenges and how to manage projects.
“Freelancing is an increasingly important form of journalism and media work,” said Stephen J. A. Ward, director of the center. “This event is an example of how the George S. Turnbull Center supports communications professionals in Portland.”
Williams, an award-winning strategic communications consultant, has seven years of experience in the industry, including agency, in-house and freelance work with Nike and Elemental Technologies, and recently founded her own freelance business, Versatile Creative Consulting.
Hager is a videographer, photographer, web designer, technical writer and live streamer whose eclectic range of clients include ballet companies, roller derby teams, international disaster preparedness firms, real estate firms, authors and a vegan restaurant. He founded his own company, Vanguard Media, immediately after graduating from the SOJC four years ago.
The event marks an “open house” at the Turnbull Center, allowing the public to learn more about the center, its graduate media programs and projects.
