EUGENE, Ore. -- (Dec. 7, 2011) – Nic Adenau, a digital arts student at the University of Oregon, has created a book to provide a glimpse into the lives of nearly two dozen members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community across the U.S.
The book uses a method called “photovoice” to enlist members of a community to tell stories visually. In April 2011, 21 participants received disposable cameras along with instructions to capture a day of their lives in photos. The cameras were returned to Adenau with a questionnaire providing insight into each participant’s life.
The participants were selected by Adenau to represent the LGBT make up in the U.S. with specific states and areas of residence.
"My goal of this book was not only to show humans outside of the queer movement how similar they are, but also to connect those inside of the LGBT community,” said Adenau.
“It is my personal philosophy that every human on this earth is connected in ways that make us similar rather than different. We all long to be loved, dare to follow our dreams, seek wisdom, and share the same society.”
The book is available for purchase at www.April21stBook.com. The proceeds from the sale of the book will help to further the mission of the LGBT support program at UO.
The UO’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Education and Support Services Program (LGBTESSP) provides education and support that enhances the academic and personal growth of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and ally students, faculty, staff and visiting community members.
After graduating in 2013, Adenau plans to expand his start-up music and video production company.
