Museum celebrates world music in free weekly series

EUGENE, Ore. -- (Oct. 23, 2009) – The Museum of Natural and Cultural History will celebrate sounds and cultures from around the globe with the "World Harmony Music Series," which starts Tuesday, Oct. 27. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the artists of the World Harmony exhibit, ask questions and listen to the artists demonstrate their instruments. Museum exhibits will open at 6 p.m., with the program starting at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

“The overriding theme of 'World Harmony' is intended to portray harmony in a humanistic sense, acknowledging the commonalities as well as the diversity of musical traditions from all over the world,” said Mark Levy, professor of ethnomusicology at the School of Music and Dance and exhibit curator.

Tuesday, Oct. 27: Panel discussion and music demonstrations, with Nick Sixkiller (Native American powwow drum), Mitsuki Dazai (Japanese koto), Eliot Grasso (Irish uilleann bagpipes) and Jennifer Kyker (Zimbabwean mbira).

Tuesday, Nov. 3: "Bagpipes in Ireland and the Balkans" with Mark Levy, exhibit curator, and Eliot Grasso (Irish uilleann bagpipes).

Tuesday, November 10:
"Women’s Participation as Zimbabwean Mbira Players," with Jennifer Kyker (Zimbabwean mbira).

Tuesday, November 17: "India - Looking Through a Musical Lens," with Sreevidhya Chandramouli (Indian veena).
