EUGENE, Ore. — (Sep. 26, 2013) — The University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History (MNCH) will host an open house Tuesday, Oct. 1, for those interested in becoming museum volunteers. The event will take place at the museum, 1680 E. 15th Ave., from 4 to 5 p.m.

Adults of all ages are welcome to attend the free event. Museum staff will describe the many volunteer opportunities that are available and the benefits of service. Training sessions featuring hands-on learning, lectures and discussions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Oct. 8-24, at the museum.

Once trained, volunteers can assist with a variety of public programs, including exhibits, visitor services and education.

"It's an exciting time to get involved with the museum," said Valerie Kendall, volunteer coordinator at MNCH.  "We're doubling the size of our public space and building a brand new exhibit that will open this winter. Volunteers will be an important part of this growth."

The upcoming exhibit "Explore Oregon!" will showcase the natural history and ecology of the Northwest. "The exhibit represents a unique opportunity for volunteers to share their passions for science, conservation and learning,” said Robyn Anderson, the museum's education coordinator.

About the Museum of Natural and Cultural History
The Museum of Natural and Cultural History, 1680 E. 15th Ave. in Eugene, is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and youth, and $10 for families. Museum members are admitted free. Guided tours are offered each Friday at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
