Common Core Standards: arguments against -- and for

The Washington Post: Most of the arguments I have heard against the Common Core State Standards strike me as hardly worth responding to, but I came across a piece on the subject the other day by Yong Zhao that is rather thoughtful.  Zhao is presidential chair and associate dean for global education at the University of Oregon’s College of Education ... In his piece, Zhao argues, as I and many others have, that labor markets are increasingly global, so that people at any given skill level are competing with others, all over the globe, with similar skills. The result, is that those with a given set of skills who are willing to work for less than others with the same set of skills will typically be hired to do it, leaving those charging more without work.

Safe Ride seeks budget increase to help offset greater demand

The Daily Emerald: Formerly the Assault Prevention Shuttle, Safe Ride strives to provide safe and timely transportation late at night. In the past, Safe Ride has followed the ASUO recommendations on budget increases, but this year, it plans to ask for a 60 percent increase. Laree Foster, the education coordinator for Safe Ride, outlines the many benefits that would come with such a large increase. “We currently turn away about 40 percent of the people that call into our service” ... “The 60 percent increase is crucial to Safe Ride because the increase in budget will allow us to hire more staff members that will let us have an extra van running every night” ... “this expansion will give us more flexibility in our schedule to offer rides for people who do not call in advance but instead feel unsafe or uncomfortable in their current situation and request a ride as soon as possible.”

Finalists chosen for Dean of Students for UO School Of Journalism and Communication

The Daily Emerald: This week, the University of Oregon School of Journalism will host the two final candidates for the position as Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication in order to replace current Dean Tim Gleason, who announced his sabbatical starting in June of 2013. The two finalists, Dr. Thomas Jacobson and Dr. Michael Evans, are both currently interim Deans in their current universities’s journalism and communication schools. Both candidates will be on the UO campus this week with tentative schedules, talking to undergraduate and graduate students ... Each finalist will also have a public presentation in the Ford Alumni Center Ballroom.

Trail Blazers start fresh after previous Rose Garden naming rights effort

The Oregonian: Five years after a previous effort fizzled out, the Portland Trail Blazers are again trying to find a naming-rights sponsor for the Rose Garden arena ...  Naming-rights sponsorships aren't generally as attractive to companies as in the past anyway, said Paul Swangard, managing director of the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at the University of Oregon's Lundquist College of Business ... On top of that, Portland presents unique challenges. “You've got a building that has a heritage to its name,” Swangard said. “As a company, you don't want to be coming in and immediately ticking off the community because they've slapped a commercial moniker on it.”
