Media mentions for November 30

15 years at the Mike

The Register-Guard: If this were a marriage, it would be the crystal year. But for the 15-year anniversary of having monthly jazz at his hangout on top of the Downtown Athletic Club, Mike Denny wants nothing more than your presence -- no crystal vases or gifts of watches will be necessary. For all these years, jazz guitarist Denny has performed live at the venue (it was called Piccolo’s when the gig first started). And shortly after Denny started, Carl Woideck also got a regular gig there. Both have been music instructors at the University of Oregon for many years.

Substance abuse making records

The Daily Astorian: “There’s a fairly high rate of drug and alcohol use in Clatsop County teenagers,” said Eric Martin, a professor and substance abuse expert from the University of Oregon, to the people in the bleachers at Warrenton Grade School ... North Coast Prevention Works, a countywide partnership to prevent substance abuse, brought in Martin and Miss Teen Oregon 2006 Jewell Ledford to talk about the prevalence and effects of drug and alcohol use among young people ... “Oregon has a significantly earlier onset of alcohol and drug use,” said Martin, adding that the state is in the Top 10 for illicit drug use per capita -- higher than California, commonly thought of as a heavier drug-using state.

'He was enclosed in a concrete seclusion room'

KVAL: Laura Brown's 5-year-old-son Lucas has developmental issues. He was in a special needs program at Danebo Elementary School in Eugene until she pulled him out last month. Brown told KVAL News that during one school day in October she was told to pick up her son from school. She arrived to find her son inside of what she described as a prison cell-like seclusion room ... Jeffrey Sprague is a professor and co-director of the Violence and Behavior Institute in the College of Education at the University of Oregon and studies seclusion and restraint. He said seclusion should not be used as an intervention. He added that those implementing the seclusion should not only be trained, but monitored as well.

What legacy does Beckham leave in USA?

USA Today: Six years ago, he came to America as a savior, a British heartthrob/soccer star who would bend it like Beckham enough to significantly raise the profile of a sport traditionally overlooked in the USA. Now he says it is time to end it like Beckham ... Paul Swangard, managing director of the University of Oregon's Warsaw Sports Marketing Center, says Beckham was the right man at the right time for MLS. “I thought (Commissioner Don) Garber had taken sort of a slow and steady approach to growing the MLS and that the league was ready for a big-name star to bring some more attention to the game and an increased awareness would help sell the sport more broadly. That clearly has been accomplished.
