The Register-Guard: A rainy night did not dampen the participation of Eugene residents, including college students, who turned out in force to share their views -- pro and con -- about Eugene’s proposed social host ordinance ... UO biology professor Peter O’Day, who lives south of campus, told councilors that the frequent parties disrupt the tranquillity of the area and contribute to the university’s reputation as a party school. “It’s more than embarrassing,” he said. “It’s a real problem” ... Laura Hinman, president of the Associated Students at the University of Oregon, presented the council with a petition signed by more than 1,000 people opposed to the ordinance.

Albany Democrat Herald: Trees are a-shipping, shops are a-decking and orders are a-placing for what all indicators point to as an improved holiday season. Timothy Duy, the author of the University of Oregon Index of Economic Indicators, said the forecast for the 2012 holiday retail season is better than last year, although he doesn’t expect anything spectacular. “Retailers are seeing an improved environment,” Duy said. “Between 4 percent to 5 percent growth over the year.” Duy attributes the optimism to an increase in employment and a healthier consumer base than last year. But, he added, not as healthy as in late 1999. “It’s a challenge to see what lies ahead,” he said of the economy. “But based on consistent growth, I’m not terribly worried.
