UO begins athlete drug tests

The Register-Guard:Playing college football or participating in acrobatics while high on illegal drugs creates a "serious" risk of injury, according to the University of Oregon, which is why the administration five days ago decided to institute random drug testing of student-athletes as a deterrent, effective immediately. The university previously had planned to consider random testing following a campus hearing in October. But UO General Counsel Randy Geller on Aug. 31 instituted the testing on a temporary but immediate basis Sept. 1 through Feb. 29.

'America needs a leader who isn't afraid of not wearing pants'

KVAL: The Oregon Duck mascot announced its campaign for President of the United States in a mock news conference posted on YouTube on Wednesday. His top issues: uniform combinations, no huddle offense and bread crumbs for all. "America needs a leader who is strong, fearless, hot and fluffy," the Duck said through its translator, announcer Jerry Allen. "That's why today I'm announcing my candidacy for President of the United States" ... Pintens later called KVAL News and said they've spent less than $500 on campaign stickers and t-shirts, money they expect to make back from merchandise sales.

Musical duo to flood Wollenberg Auditorium with songs about water

The Daily News: A program of classical art songs about water will gush forth at Lower Columbia College Friday evening. Charlotte Pistor, a soprano who lives in Salzburg, Austria, will sing the program of songs from that country, and from Germany, France, Great Britain -- along with an obscure American song. Her accompanist will be Dr. Alexandre Dossin, a piano professor at the University of Oregon who also has an impressive musical resume ... Dossin, a native of Brazil, received his master's degree from the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and his Doctor of Music Arts from the University of Texas. He's won numerous piano competitions and played at the Columbia Theatre in 2007.

International scholar challenges education community

The Siuslaw News:"What brings great test scores may hamper entrepreneurial qualities," said guest speaker Yong Zhao, Ph.D., during Siuslaw School District's back-to-school breakfast last week attended by local educators and others. Zhao is University of Oregon's first presidential chairman for academic extension and is the director of the Center for Advanced Technology in Education. He speaks internationally on education issues. "I think our schools have too many reforms. We have a flavor of the year, of the month," said Zhao.

The Numbers Behind Hiring at the UO

Statesman Journal: At the University of Oregon, a report from the professors' union shows the school's hiring has been heavy on administrators and light on faculty, especially permanent professors ... A report by Howard Bunsis of the American Association of University Professors shows the UO has hired 26 percent more full-time administrators since 2005 and 22 percent more part-time administrators. Full-time and part-time faculty have only increased 15 and 17 percent, respectively.
