Price to compete

The Register-Guard: It's business, not physics, but Kees de Kluyver is anticipating a "quantum leap" in stature of the Oregon MBA program. In his third year at the helm of the University of Oregon's Lundquist College of Business, de Kluyver is making dramatic moves with the business graduate degree program. He boosted tuition for MBA students by 25 percent for the coming academic year and signaled he will implement another 25 percent boost for 2013-14. He aims to double enrollment, up to 160, of MBA students at the Eugene campus in three years. He's making new hires with "fresh blood, fresh eyes, a different way of looking at things and a new energy level," one faculty member said ... "We want to increase, as rapidly as we can, our standing among public institutions," the dean said.

Oregon's unions show growth

The Register-Guard: U.S. union membership ... was on a slow and steady slide for at least a decade before the recent recession. Oregon's rate ... followed along that same downward trend. But in 2007, Oregon's rate of unionized workers began to turn up slightly, while the national average continued to fall ... "We continue to have pretty high public sector union representation, so that's one piece of it," said Bob Bussel, director of the University of Oregon's Labor Education Research Center ... An organizing campaign that drew attention earlier this year close to home was at the UO ... The campaign, which began before the recession hit, was prompted by a desire by teachers to have a more cohesive, organized voice for higher education in Oregon, and for their students.

Artfully comic

The Register-Guard: People of all ages came to the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon campus on Saturday to see a new exhibit featuring some old friends: the "Peanuts" gang. "Good Grief!" is an exhibition of original panels drawn by the late Charles M. Schulz during his 50 years as a comic strip artist. The exhibit, curated by UO English professor Ben Saunders, celebrates the school's new Comics Studies minor ... Saunders said he chose a "Peanuts" exhibition to celebrate the new Comic Studies minor because of his admiration for Schulz. "He's one of the psychologically healthiest human beings ever encountered through their art work," he said. Schulz was best known for turning "fairly ordinary life circumstances into something really remarkable."

The Five Most Entertaining Mascots in the Pac-12 Conference

Yahoo! Sports: The sports teams that play in the Pac-12 conference are each supported by interesting mascots, including an unusual tree, a Disney character look-a-like, and a horse named Traveler. The following is one fan's list of the top five that are the most entertaining ... 1. Puddles. Whether you call him Puddles, or just The Duck, The University of Oregon mascot looks just like Donald Duck. He can be seen entertaining the crowd in support of several of the school's teams, and in recent years has become famous for doing push-ups after every point scored by the football team (one of the highest scoring teams in the country).

Documents confirm Oregon's strategy in NCAA's football investigation

The Register-Guard: Documents released by the University of Oregon on Friday regarding the ongoing NCAA investigation into possible recruiting violations by the football program confirm that the Ducks have pursued a summary disposition process -- essentially a plea bargain -- whereby a school and the NCAA enforcement staff attempt to reach agreement on rules violations and sanctions. A previous release of records in February indicated the UO might be seeking a summary disposition process, and Friday's documents confirm that the UO's lawyers and the NCAA have been discussing that option since at least April.

UO, OSU: The price of football victories

Portland Business Journal: It's a big weekend for Division I-A football fans with both the University of Oregon Ducks and the Oregon State Beavers hosting season-openers on Saturday. The Ducks take on Arkansas State at 7:30 p.m., while the Beavers have a 1 p.m. matchup against the Wisconsin Badgers. (The Beavers were scheduled to play Nicholls State University of Thibodaux, La., but the game was postponed due to the destruction left behind by Hurricane Isaac.) All the hoopla around college football got my colleague Jason Bolton at the Memphis Business Journal wondering about just how much universities are willing to spend on football. Turns out, the UO and OSU are small-timers when it comes to pigskin funding -- at least compared to other top-tier Division 1 programs.
