The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art features an exhibition of faculty works from the University of Oregon’s Department of Art

EUGENE, Ore. -- (Jan. 3, 2012) – “The Long Now,” an exhibition featuring the works of 22 University of Oregon Department of Art faculty members, will be on view Jan. 21 to April 8 in the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art’s Coeta and Donald Barker Changing Exhibitions Gallery and new Artist Project Space. The exhibition opens with a free reception on Friday, Jan. 20, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

“The Long Now” is curated by Stamatina Gregory, an independent curator and critic from New York City. Gregory has organized an exhibition of diverse practices and ideas, from the complex relationships between technology, nature, and labor to contemporary explorations of gestural painting. Several installations have been created for the show, including a hands-on, participatory work by Brian Gillis and John Park on the expanded field of broadcasting.

Gregory will give a talk and gallery tour of the exhibition at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, in the museum.

“The overall mode of inquiry for the exhibition is temporality, both in terms of work that unfolds over time, in method or perception, and in the sense that the show will document a particular moment in the varied practices of the department,” Gregory says.

“Thisexhibition will be an exciting and unusual opportunity to see the work of nationally and internationally recognized artists on our faculty, many of whom don’t normally exhibit within the region,” says Laura Vandenburgh, head of  the UO Department of Art.

“For our first faculty show in six years, we are thrilled for the opportunity to share our work with students, our academic colleagues and the larger community,” Vandenburgh says. “Encompassing diverse contemporary practices and ideas in our field, the show includes work by many terrific younger artists who have joined the faculty recently, as well as compelling new developments in the work of long-standing faculty.”

Artists featured in the exhibition are Carla Bengtson, Tannaz Farsi, Surabhi Ghosh, Brian Gillis, Ron Graff, Craig Hickman, Colin Ives, Anya Kivarkis, Sana Krusoe, Sylvan Lionni, Charlene Liu, Donald Morgan, John Park, Dan Powell, Jan Reaves, Jack Ryan, Michael Salter, Ying Tan, Kartz Ucci, Laura Vandenburgh, Terri Warpinski and Amanda Wojick.

In addition to the exhibition in Eugene, “Notes on a Recent Arrival,” a smaller installation of selected works by six faculty artists, will be on view at the White Box in Portland. Drawn from the ideas emerging from “The Long Now,” the show will be on view Jan. 24 to March 24.

A catalog to accompany the exhibition will be available beginning in mid-March and will be available for sale at Precious Cargo: The Museum Store.

“The Long Now” is made possible by support from the Donald and Coeta Barker Changing Exhibitions Endowment Fund, the William C. Mitchell Estate, JSMA members, the Ann Swindells Chair in Architecture and Allied Arts and the School of Architecture and Allied Arts.
