EUGENE, Ore. -- (May 23, 2011) -- For the first time, the University of Oregon will honor students, faculty, staff, retirees and UO Alumni Association and UO Foundation board members who have recently passed away.

"University of Oregon Remembers" on May 25 is a day of observance to acknowledge the loss of individuals from the campus community. The events are organized by the Office of President.

The day of observance will begin with a ceremonial flag lowering to half-staff at 8 a.m. by UO President Richard Lariviere and an ROTC Color Guard on the north side of the Erb Memorial Union, 1222 E 13th Ave.

At 2 p.m., in the lawn area north of the Pioneer Mother statue between Johnson Hall and Gerlinger Hall, the individual names of members of the academic community who have passed away during the past two years will be read.

There will be a tent and a limited number of chairs for those who may want to be present for the full reading, which is expected to be approximately 30 minutes.

The intent is for the event to become an annual tradition before Memorial Day to honor individuals lost during the preceding year.
