EUGENE, Ore. -- (Nov. 11, 2010) - The University of Oregon has once again set a new record for its enrollment. Official enrollment data released today by the Oregon University System shows total enrollment of 23,389 at the UO, an increase of 4.5 percent or approximately 1,000 students.
The numbers also show that more students are entering the university and continuing studies at the UO on a path to graduation day. With 3,978 newly admitted freshmen and 1,497 transfer students, the UO has the largest newly admitted class of undergraduates (5,475) among the OUS institutions. In addition, UO retention of first-time freshmen students in 2009 reached an all-time high of 85.9 percent, the highest rate among OUS institutions this year.
"We're excited about the record enrollment and retention figures that demonstrate how the University of Oregon is attracting the best and brightest students," said Roger Thompson, vice provost for enrollment management. "All indications point toward continued success with applications for next year up considerably this fall already."
The student body at the UO continues to grow and diversify. There is a 71.6 percent increase of freshman students who identify as Hispanic from last year, a 39.6 percent increase in African American freshmen, and 40.9 percent increase in multiracial/multiethnic freshmen.
In addition, more students are coming to the UO from other countries, including an increase of 257 more students from China, the top country of origin for international students. In total, the UO has 1,809 international students, including community education students, representing 7.7 percent of total enrollment.
