EUGENE, Ore. -- (Oct. 29, 2010) -- The University of Oregon will celebrate Veterans Day with a slide presentation, reception and ceremony featuring remarks from UO President Richard Lariviere and Vice President for Student Affairs Robin Holmes.
Students, faculty, staff, alumni and the general public are invited to the events on Thursday, Nov. 11, at the Agate Hall Auditorium, 1787 Agate St. UO community members who have served in the military will be honored.
The day will kick off with a Veterans Day reception at 10 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. ceremony. Lariviere will provide opening remarks, and other speakers will include veterans from the UO. Photos and a slide presentation at the reception will show the history of the military's association with the UO from past through present.
A variety of speakers will talk about their experiences, transition issues facing veterans and current services offered to veterans at the university.
The third annual Veterans Day Recognition events are being organized by the UO administration in conjunction with the UO Nontraditional Student Programs, Veterans and Family Student Association, UO Army ROTC and university archives.
In addition, the Veterans and Family Student Association will host a variety of events to commemorate Veterans Awareness Week.
A Veterans Art Show, featuring works by UO student veterans, will be held Monday through Thursday, Nov. 8-11, in the EMU Concourse. Visitors are invited to honor the veterans they know by writing their names on a recognition board.
A clothing drive will be held throughout the week, with new and lightly-used clothing collected in purple donations boxes at various locations around campus. The clothing will be given to homeless veterans.
The Veterans and Family Student Association will hold its own Veterans Day Reception from noon to 2 p.m. on Nov. 11, in EMU Suite 2. Light refreshments will be provided.
