PORTLAND, Ore. -- (May 26, 2010) – A group of architecture and fine arts students from the University of Oregon will unveil their final projects during Portland's First Thursday gallery openings on June 3.
The projects by both undergraduate and graduate students from the UO School of Architecture and Allied Arts will range from kitchen appliance designs to fine art video installations. The students' work will be displayed at a variety of locations around Portland.
Students from the Department of Architecture and from its product design program will have their work on display from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. June 3, in the General Automotive Building at 411 N.W. Park Ave. After the First Thursday exhibition, selected projects will be on display June 7 to July 17 at the UO Portland Commons Gallery, 70 N.W. Couch Street.
Four graduating students from the product design program have designed kitchen appliances for their final projects. The course — taught by Christian Freissler and Paul Backett , both from Ziba Design — involved months of designing, and resulted in some unique kitchen appliances.
Students from four architecture terminal design studios — taught by Portland firms Holst Architecture and Allied Works Architecture, and longtime architecture faculty members Don Genasci and Gerry Gast — also will have their projects displayed at the First Thursday galleries.
The Allied Works studio has focused on establishing a music innovation center in Portland's Rose Quarter District. The Holst studio presents proposals for a variety of building types in Portland, each determined by the individual student's interests.
Genasci's studio has established building proposals in Portland's northwest district, and its students have worked with area residents to establish an urban master plan. Gast's students have projects that adhere to a larger theme of "places full of time," with proposed building locations all over the world.
Thirteen graduating digital art students will display their work during the First Thursday event, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the UO White Box, 24 N.W. First Ave., in Portland. The works will remain on display through June 24. White Box hours are noon to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
The class — taught by Kartz Ucci, an assistant professor of digital arts at UO — was loosely united by a theme of "Luminous Deer," a reference to the White Stag neon sign on the building's roof. The exhibition includes print, decorative objects, video and interactive installations.
The UO's master of fine arts graduate student exhibition "Brightly Colored Party," currently on display at Disjecta, 8371 N. Interstate Ave., in Portland, will continue until May 30. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The exhibit includes painting, sculpture, photography and installations.
