Graduate students to cross interdisciplinary borders at inaugural UO event

EUGENE, Ore. - (April 26, 2010) - More than 100 University of Oregon graduate students will gather to cross-pollinate their research and ideas at the university's first-ever Graduate Student Research Forum on Friday, April 30.

The forum, titled "Crossing Borders," will encourage interdisciplinary approaches to research with a keynote panel and a variety of other events throughout the day. The event is free and open to the public, and will be from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Gerlinger Lounge, 1468 University St.

Subjects ranging from sustainability to fantasy literature will be addressed in a total of 20 panel discussions and other events scheduled over six and a half hours. The lineup of 60- and 90-minute sessions - many of them to be held concurrently - will feature a mix of perspectives from graduate students in varied programs. For instance, graduate students in school psychology, special education and counseling psychology will collaborate in a panel on promoting positive behavior in schools; students in environmental studies, psychology, sociology and English will work together on a session about climate change.

The forum will kick off with opening remarks by UO President Richard Lariviere and Richard Linton, the university's vice president for research and graduate studies. An hour-long keynote session for all participants will explore the theme of crossing borders, and a one-hour "poster session" in the afternoon will offer opportunities for about 20 graduate students to network and advertise their research.

Friday's event is intended to illuminate the growing need for scholars across all fields to critically examine interdisciplinary work as a transformative academic and social force.
