University of Oregon museums open on Thanksgiving holiday weekend

EUGENE, Ore. -- (Nov. 25, 2009) - Two museums on the University of Oregon campus will be open during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. For community members who may be entertaining family or friends, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and the Museum of Natural and Cultural History could be a welcomed addition to the holiday festivities.

In addition to exhibits, both museum stores, "Precious Cargo: The Museum Store" and "Past and Presents" will be open for those looking for holiday gifts.

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and the Museum of Natural and Cultural History holiday hours are:
• Wednesday, Nov. 25: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. for JSMA, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. for MNCH
• Thursday, Nov. 26: Closed
• Friday, Nov. 27: 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
• Saturday, Nov. 28: 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
• Sunday, Nov. 29: 11 a.m-5 p.m.

Marché Museum Café at the JSMA will be open:
• Friday, Nov. 27: 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
• Saturday, Nov. 28: 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
• Sunday, Nov. 29: 11 a.m-4 p.m.

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is located on the University of Oregon campus at 1430 Johnson Lane. Currently on view are "Faster Than a Speeding Bullet: The Art of the Superhero," History of Photography, Superheroes in Japan: Nineteenth Century Ukiyo-e, Iconicity, and Capelo plus collection galleries devoted to Russian icons and art from America, China, Japan, Korea, and elsewhere. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens. Free admission is given to ages 18 and under, JSMA members, college students with ID, and University of Oregon faculty, staff and students. The Museum of Natural and Cultural History is located at 1680 E. 15th Ave. The museum holds one of Oregon's most significant collections of Native American cultural and archaeological artifacts, spanning 15,000 years. Hand-crafted items, including textiles, musical instruments, weapons, and other objects representing traditional technologies and everyday life also come from southeast Asia, the Philippines, Africa, Oceania and Africa. Admission is $3 for adults; $2 for seniors and youths ages 17 and under; and $8 for families (two adults and up to four youths). Museum members, university faculty and staff and students are admitted free.
