University of Oregon's new dean of students will begin in May

Paul ShangEUGENE,
Ore. -- (April 7, 2009) - Paul Shang will join the University of Oregon as
assistant vice president and dean of students on May 1. In the position, Shang will serve as a member
of the student affairs senior management team and collaborate with many areas
of campus on matters related to student well being and success.

Most
recently, Shang was assistant vice chancellor for student development at the
University of Missouri-Kansas City. He was previously dean of student
development at Missouri Western State University, and director of student
affairs and director of student and enrollment services at a campus of Penn
State University's Commonwealth College.

He
brings to UO a breadth of experience in student development, student affairs
administration, judicial affairs, serving students of color, crisis management,
facilitation of service delivery through use of technology, academic advising
administration, implementation of scholastic standards and policies,
orientation, recruitment, and teaching and leadership of first year experience
courses.

The
University of Oregon experienced record enrollment last fall and anticipates
another large incoming freshman class next year. Shang's leadership in undergraduate
education, particularly with freshmen students, is one of the reasons Robin
Holmes, UO vice president for student affairs, selected him from the national
search candidates.

"I'm extremely pleased to welcome Paul to the
UO community," said Holmes. "He comes to us highly recommended by
faculty, administrators and students. He brings a comprehensive set of
experiences, not only in traditional student affairs units, but also as a
nationally recognized scholar in the field of student development."

As
dean of students, Shang will be responsible for the learning and development of
students outside the classroom including supervision of comprehensive student
support services.

"I am
thrilled to join the outstanding and ambitious division of student affairs at
the University of Oregon," said Shang. "This appointment for me is a singular
opportunity to contribute in many different ways to the university that is
widely known for creatively engaging students and promoting their success."

Shang
received his B.A. from Florida State University in Government and Philosophy. He
also received an M.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy from FSU.
