The University of Oregon offers a program that fulfills admission requirements to Oregon State University's (OSU) College of Pharmacy Pharm.D. program and to most other accredited pharmacy schools.

Students considering applying to other pharmacy schools should obtain information on admission requirements from the Pharmacy Schools Admission Requirements book, available for review in the Office of Academic Advising, 364 Oregon Hall, or in the head adviser's office. There are considerable variations in admission requirements.

Required for Admission to the OSU College of Pharmacy :

To prepare for a Pharm.D. program at Oregon State University, you will need to take the following courses (about 100 hours):
These courses also get you very close to earning a general science degree at UO--a great idea!

OSU COURSES REQUIRED

UO EQUIVALENTS

Terms Offered at UO

General chemistry (CH 221,222, 223)
Their general chemistry courses have laboratory included

CH 221, 222, 223 or CH 224, 225, 226
Labs:
CH 227, 228, 229 or CH 237, 238, 239.

221, 222, 223 and 227, 228, 229 offered as a series (FWS) or in the summer(U)

Organic chemistry (CH 334, 335, 336, 337)

CH 331, 335, 336, and 337(lab)

offered as a series (FWS) or U

General biology (BI 211, 212, 213)

OSU physics courses have laboratory included

PH 201, 202, 203
Labs: PH 204, 205, 206

offered as a series (FWS) or U

121 & 122 offered every term; 123, FWS

Speech (COMM 218)

CPSY 410 or Interpersonal Communication from a community college

CPSY 410 offered F & S. ALERT! Check early with your planned schools. Reports are coming in that SOME schools don't accept CPSY 410! That would mean taking speech at a CC!

Calculus (MATH 241)

MATH 241 or 251

Offered every term

Statistics (ST 201)   for 2004 and beyond

MATH 243 or Psy 302

Offered every term

Offered every term

Economics

ECON 201

Offered every term

First Aid (H 386)

PEC 241 or current Red Cross CPR & first aid card (less expensive through the Red Cross)

Offered every term
Notes:
All required courses should be taken on a graded basis.
The Physiology Course requirements can also be met by taking the full year of majors biochemistry, CH 461, 462, 463. If you choose this option, you will have to take physiology at OSU. If you have the time, you may take both sequences here.

Required for Graduation from OSU:

Students accepted into the Pharm.D. program at will be expected to complete (and receive) a baccalaureate degree by the end of their second year in the program. If you already have a baccalaureate, you've already met that requirement. If you don't, the College of Pharmacy advisor recommends general science for a major. Try to complete as many as possible prior to admission. Where I have given you a link to an OSU page below, please try to find a UO course that has a similar title and course description.

Non-Curricular Requirements for Admission

Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT). The PCAT is administered three times each year and includes subtests on the basic principles of biology and chemistry, verbal ability, quantitative ability, and reading comprehension. Application blanks are available in the Office of Academic Advising and Student Services. The test must be completed well in advance of matriculation, so students are urged to consider the fall or winter test the year before anticipated admission. OSU does not require this test.

Formal Application. Students may download application material from Oregon State University College of Pharmacy, Corvallis, Oregon, in July the year before anticipated admission. The deadline for completed applications is normally mid January. There is an early admission program that requires applications by January 31. (see OSU Early Admissions). Students may schedule appointments with Admissions personnel at OSU.

Letters of Recommendation. Applicants are asked to submit letters of recommendation from science faculty members in the prescribed courses or from research situations. It is not uncommon to be asked for a letter from a pharmacist, in fact, a letter from a pharmacist is very important..

Career Options in Pharmacy

The program outlined above prepares students to enter OSU and to receive a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PHARM. D.). Students with a research interest may also wish to complete an undergraduate degree in one of the sciences at the University of Oregon and enter a Ph.D. program in pharmacology. The basic requirements outlined above can be adapted to several different options.
