Sailing board, version 1, going, going... not yet.

Sailing Board, version 2..., going, going, GONE!

Daily Report from Anthony Johnson

The 21st of August was meant to be our sailing date, however, due to the absence of a foreign vessel clearance form and the ongoing court action we are in a standby mode.   Much of the day is spent organizing and waiting, with uncertainty as to whether or not we will sail in one day or in several.

Emilie and William continue to revise the cruise plan and develop various options that depend on the sailing date.  Given our contingency time and considerable sacrifice of scientific objectives, we decide that we can absorb 5-6 days of waiting in port. However, this would greatly diminish the scientific potential of the experiment.

Our sailing date is pushed back throughout the day and eventually it is pushed to Saturday.

During Friday afternoon Toomey e-mails Purdy and talks with Rupert and Houtman regarding how to make a decision regarding the mitigation plan.  The difficulty here is that the PIs have not previously worked with MMOs, so it is hard to know how to react to the new and expanded exclusion zone.  These discussions are extremely helpful.

At 5:35 PDT an e-mail is received from Liz Tirpak at the state department.  This e-mail includes the foriegn vessel clearance form from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada and a memorandum from Kevin Conley, DFO regarding work in the Endeavour MPA.

Dr. G. M. Purdy sends sailing orders to the R/V Marcus Langseth, it arrives at ~1900 LT.  MGL0910 will begin the following day, August 22.  After nearly 2 years of permitting and scheduling efforts, we are finally preparing to sail. There are still some issues to resolve regarding the MMO operations.
