Meagan Meyer (LDEO and MMO) listening in on PAM (Passive Acoustic Monitoring)

Daily Report from Anthony Johnson
083109_V2_DR_MGL.pdf
Day begins with guns at 9 m, on line for shooting MGL0910_07.  Guns performing well initially.  The cargo vessel Sapphire Rae is hove to over the center-north part of array.  It is not too distant from us now (~10-20 km). A problem in terms of noise, however, it is meant to get underway for Portland around 2000 hours (LT); actually underway at 21:20 PDT.  Throughout the night we will be shooting the crustal grid.

Given that we have lost some time on the undershoot lines due to gun repair and due to wanting the maximum power (i.e., we chose to reshoot lines), it is our hope to make up time on the current shooting grid by repairing guns while underway.  This may mean that we only have 3 of 4 strings, or some guns missing.  However, it is expected that maximum power is not necessary for these lines.  One weakness with this strategy is that gun string 1 is the major source of problems, however, to work on this string we must also move gun string 2 forward.

PAM encounters noise problems.  Retrieved for repair; acoustic monitoring moved to ship’s hull-mounted hydrophone.
