Facilities Services
invested $31, 877 to install awnings on various buildings across
campus. Facilities
calculated the potential savings for each room by measuring the
room temperature with and without a normal room shade pulled down.
Awning installations were prioritized based on the effectiveness
and energy savings that the awnings would provide. Because the
installation of awnings would effect the exterior appearance of
the building, the planning department was involved in order to
assure campus aesthetics.
Awnings, such as
these pictured on the Volcanology building are also installed
on Johnson Hall, Hendrix Hall, Gerlinger Hall, and the Music Building.
For the
Volcanology building, awnings are installed primarily on the south
side with a few on the west. These awnings work to block high-angled
summer light, reducing the amount of heat entering the building
and therefore reducing the need for cooling. During the winter months,
the awnings still allow in the low-angled winter sunlight and can
be rolled up to maximize the available light.
