Substantive Items
	HOPES program:
similar to last year in terms of overall organization. Professional showcase is a new
item, and will feature work by PNW professionals demonstrating sustainable design principles.
Dinner break will be provided before keynote speaker saturday. Also, Sunday schedule will end at noon to allow
		for travel, etc.

	Speakers:
Friday Night speaker is slated to be Jack Eliot, a professor at Cornell.
Ed Mazria's talk, "Meeting Humanity's Greatest Challenge," will focus on global warming.
Cameron Sinclair's talk will focus on disaster relief efforts in Sri Lanka.

	Discussion:

		Friday Speaker:
Barry Wasserman might be another possibility for a Friday night speaker. Is already participating in
Eco-Aesthetics workshop. Potential of moving Ed Mazria to Friday to kick off the conference. Better to have
most dynamic speaker as the leadoff speaker, in order to get people to the conference and to increase
student involvement, and also to serve as a starting point for Saturday discussions. Could offer two talks on saturday: Jack Eliot and Barry Wasserman.

		Breaks:
Good to have one longer break, possibily in the afternoon, but maybe two is two many.
Also, better to have fewer blank spots at the end of events and have different tracks
end at the same time to allow crossover. Possibly to use certain events, such as
materials demonstrations and student presentations, as a filler during the break.

		Sustainability Tour:
Christine Thompson has put together a self-guided tour of campus sustainability. Tour probably needs more time,
maybe 1.5 hours. Description of tour should include highlights, such as the Green Chemistry Lab, Lillis Hall, etc.

		Other department/group involvement:
SAWA panel, "beyond the white picket fence," currently a little vague in focus, but should
talk about issues regarding suburbia, housing.

3pm student group is putting on "retrofitting suburbia" panel. Schedule is pretty multidisciplinary,
we would like to advertise this to other departments. Good idea to credit panel-organizing
groups in the schedule and program.

Chemistry department might be interested in organizing something for the conference. Check the
Green Chemistry Lab website for contact information. jessy's roommate acutally works in the UO
			Green Chemistry Lab.

SBS has done a lot with biodiesel. They may be interested in being involved in the biodiesel panel.

		Workshops:
Good to see more workshops than in past years. Might be good idea to have some on Friday.

	Outreach:
		Goal for conference:
is to have 500 people register for conference. 300 students, 100 community
members, 100 students from other regional universities.
		Outreach:
Posters. Outreach position is trying to get students at other campuses to organize
			student trips.

			Discussion:
"Rethink" Lecture Series at PSU, could be good venue for promoting HOPES. Perhaps
distribute flyers, have announcement made at some of the larger events.

Good idea to get panel organizers to advertise to their constituents. They all have list-serves,
other means to advertise their own panel and the conference in general.

Inside Oregon is putting together an article on campus sustainablity office, contact: Paul Amundson ?

Get information, pictures put on school website and school calendar.

Potential outreach mole at Washington State, ECS Prof Matt Taylor, former grad.

Make sure Homestay includes provisions for day-of needs.

ARCOSANTI usually sends people. we should get in contact with them.

City of Eugene may be interested in sending people to conference. Also, they may have
a mailing list for their own sustainablity event. Follow up with Kitty Piercy, might be good
to have her give a talk leading into Ed Mazria's lead-off talk. Or Frohnmeyer, if Kitty Piercy
			is not available.

Ron Kellett will be involved with conference through panel discussion of Tacoma.

Should talk to Register Guard and Eugene Weekly to cover the conference in advance, instead of
advertising. Diane Deets, at the Register Guard, may be writing a monthly column on sustainability
			issues.

Is there a press release about the conference? Should we continually release things as new developments
take place. Charrette and Design Challenge might be good items for an early press release.

EWEB will due marketing for the panel they are hosting. Might be convinced to extend their marketing to
cover the conference as a whole. Needs to happen now, though.

	HOPES warts and winners:

what has worked well in the past, what hasn't?

		Discussion:

A couple of charrette's ago, the theme required a lot of technical knowledge. Good to have an on-call technical
expert to advise teams, maybe a brownfields expert. Best time would be a few hours in, after teams have had
a chance to digest some of the issues. Possibly a person on the brownfields panel will be willing to drop in to the
conference early. might be structured as an intermediate pin-up.

perhaps there should be different categories which charrette projects can be judged on. different teams can
focus on different areas of the problem. Example themes might be: best integration between project and larger community,
best integration of sustainable design principles, etc, best incorporation of industrial use. could all be RE: based.
or, some might concentrate on green design, others on economic viability, etc. intermediate pinup might provide
opportunity for cross-fertilization of ideas. first stage, perhaps have teams break into different focus areas,
then later report back to the larger group.

	Wrap-up:
		next meeting April 18th 12-1:30.
