Lane County Checklist to Appear this Spring

Vascular Plants of Lane County, Oregon: An Annotated Checklist

By C. Simpson, J. Koenig, J. Lippert, R. Love, B. Newhouse, N. Otting, S. Sundberg, D. Wagner and P. Warner. Emerald Chapter, Native Plant Society of Oregon. Eugene, Oregon. 2002. Approximately 90 pages. Paper, spiral binding. $15.

Emerald Chapter, NPSO, has announced plans to publish a checklist of Lane County's native and naturalized vascular plants this spring. Last fall the ENHS executive board enthusiastically endorsed the project and approved a no-interest loan to help defray publication costs to support this landmark natural history resource.

The Checklist includes 1,732 plant taxa, which represent 39 percent of the 4,448 plants currently recognized by the Oregon Vascular Plant Checklist Project at OSU. However, the Checklist is far more than simply a list of species: it includes a color map of Lane County's five major ecoregions as well as information about rare and endangered species, noxious weeds, and invasive ornamentals. For every species found in Lane County information is given on expected habitat, ecoregion, and occurrence frequency. Native or nonnative origin is also designated. Data were derived from a variety of academic, agency, organization, and private sources, collected over a nine-year period.

Lane County artist Tanya Harvey provided the cover design composed of her beautiful digital images.

A goal of the authors has been to keep the new book affordable. All proceeds after expenses will be donated to the Oregon Flora Project. If you would like to receive advance notification of availability send your name and e-mail address to csimpson@oregon.uoregon.edu.

Advance orders accepted April 1, 2002. To receive one or more copies of the Checklist, please send check for $15 for each copy to Lane County Checklist, Emerald Chapter, Native Plant Society of Oregon, PO Box 902, Eugene, OR 97440-0902.
