Probe for Windows

Probe for Windows NT is a complete acquisition, automation and analysis package for WDS (wavelength dispersive) EPMA (Electron Probe Micro-Analysis). It is available in a 32 bit version, for Win 95/98 or Win NT (4.0 or higher) only, on the Intel Pentium, Pentium Pro or Pentium II platform. Probe for Windows can acquire, automate and analyze x-ray intensities on JEOL, ARL and Cameca microprobes and SEMs with WDS and EDS spectrometers and stage motors.

Probe for Windows can also be run off-line to simply re-process previously acquired x-ray intensity data. Because Probe for Windows stores all standard, unknown and wavescan sample data and retains all experimental conditions in a single Microsoft Access relational database file (v. 3.5 Access DAO), it is extremely simple to transfer Probe for Windows intensity data to another computer for off-line reprocessing with another copy of Probe for Windows running in "demonstration" mode.

The following disk images are supplied for use by students and faculty at the University of California at Berkeley for re-processing of electron microprobe data and images acquired on the Berkeley SX-51 electron microprobe. Software licensing restrictions require that only Berkeley.Edu domain addresses may download the software and manuals provided here.

For other use of the software and for additional information, please contact the distributor, Advanced Microbeam, via their web site, http://www.advancedmicrobeam.com

Installation:
All of the following program files must be extracted using a PkZip compatible extraction utility. If you do not have one you can download the shareware PKUNZIP.EXE file and use it from the Command Prompt window. A much nicer Windows GUI version of Pkzip is available from their web site.

Probe for Windows (32 bit) Complete Installation (single file install)

To install Probe for Windows 32, download the indicated files to a temporary directory on your computer. Probe for Windows 32 requires Windows 95/98 or NT 4.0. Unzip the files using a PkZip compatible extraction utility. The complete installation disks or file will require a password for the files to be extracted.

Once installed, the software must be configured by running one of the Probe for Windows applications. The installation utility will provide an icon for the main Probe for Windows application only, other icons can be manually created by the user. Simply double-click the Probe for Windows icon and the software will configure itself.

Configuration:
Since the default software installation configuration is for a JEOL 5 spectrometer microprobe, it may be necessary to re-configure Probe for Windows for the Berkeley SX-51 configuration, especially if there is a need for creating tab delimited output containing spectrometer angstrom or stage micron data from the Berkeley SX-51.

To modify the default configuration for the Berkeley SX-51 configuration, first configure the installation by running one of the Probe for Windows applications, exiting the program, then download the following file. For the 32 bit Probe for Windows software (versions 4.0 and higher) extract the SX50-32.ZIP file to the Probe for Windows directory (usually "C:Program Files\Probe for Windows").

Update:
To update the Probe for Windows software you will need to download and extract the following files. Since the full installation is not updated as frequently as the update files, it is recommended that you download and extract these files wherever you are installing the program for the first time.

Probe for Windows (32 bit) Update Only (single file update)

To update your Probe for Windows installation, download the indicated files to a temporary directory on your hard disk and unzip the files using a PkZip compatible extraction utility. You may extract them directly to the application directory or copy the newly extracted files to the application directory, usually "C:\Program Files\Probe for Windows" for the 32 bit version.

Note that these disk update files are NOT a complete installation of Probe for Windows and are only to be used to update a previously installed and configured installation.
